Now I am sure you have read the tabloids, gossip blogs and news about the controversial event that is the Slut Walk. Lingerie wearing ladies marched the streets of Downtown to shout and demand for respect, something that should be automatically given. The websites covered the minor topics of the event including, 21 Savage holding a poster which read ,"I'm a h*e too". However, there were a large amount of celebrities that participated for the cause, and joined Amber Rose to make a difference. Unfortunately, many of these blogs missed these moments.
Lucky for us a collaborative project between the Indigo Stop and Poetic Photography covered the star studded event for a cause.
2017 has been a year of protests, boycotts and civil marches. Entering October, the tradition of rallies for a cause was continued By Amber Rose. Rose's third annual slut walk invited all to join her in a march for sexual injustice and gender inequality.Walking down the streets of Downtown Los Angeles, sporting their revealing costumes and boldly worded signs, many protesters including Rose raised awareness for their causes.
Year after year, women like Rose are constantly harassed with terms such as "hoe", "slut" and many more! Fighting back against these terms, she decided to bring the already created movement to Los Angeles. According to the website's mission statement, "The Amber Rose Slut Walk aims to impact and uplift, while shifting the paradigm of rape culture. The event provides a safe, all-inclusive space to entertain, educate and empower."
Always faced with criticism for the event, Rose continued to shine through the event like only she could. Sporting a new look and looking unapologetically happy, Rose marched with a cape reading "captain save a hoe". She also used the event to help catapult new artists careers. Many new vendors, comedians, up and coming artist had the opportunity to put on the show themselves. One of the artist, included photographer Justice Piggue. A part of Poetic Photography's global takeover, she was invited to shoot the star studded event and lived for the moment.
This year's celebration included a speech from the Muva of Occasions , Amber Rose. Where she once again acknowledged the message of the event and how we can make an effective change as a society. She also was joined by her best friend Black Chynna and boyfriend 21 Savage. Various celebrities were at attendance of the event including Kehlani, Big Boy and more.
There was also an educational aspect this year's occasion. Special teachers had workshops on knowing your rights, sex task and relationships. Music and moguls collided against rape culture, showing both activism and heroism. It is not every day that celebrities take out time or a full day to use their platform in a message that responds to self love, bullying and sex shaming. As Rose continues to throw this amazing event, I can only hope that more men would understand the purpose. No, it is not just for women to walk around nearly naked saying inappropriate things! This event has a deeper meaning and Rose will continue to shout it loudly and proudly.
"Instead of telling women how to dress or assuming it is their fault, we have to teach men that no means no". Rose's message was heard throughout all of Downtown Los Angeles
Making his return to the grand stage, Lil Wayne indeed brought the fire for La Vernapalooza. Students from the University of La Verne and Pomona residents were treated to an up an close performance from rappers Omen, Kozz and Lil Wayne at the Fox Theater Pomona.
A fun fact about me that not many of my readers know about is that I am a huge fan of concerts. I spent 2015-2017 going to a plethora of concerts and marking off the various performers I would see in my concert book. Yes, I have a concert book. Within it is a list of various rappers, singers or performers that I saw in person. I've seen the Weekend, YG, Maroon 5, Drake, Rihanna and more. This year I wanted to continue the streak by adding a hip hop legend on my list.
Concert going is fun but I gained the skills of finding the best things to wear, the best places to stand to avoid drunk concert altercations and even how to handle a bad performer at a terrible venue. Luckily for me, I only had to conquer a few of those obstacles at the Fox Theater.
First thing first, the venue sells alcoholic beverages and is located by various bars in the Pomona area. It is safe to assume that visiting this area you are conquering a hot- headed crowd. Regardless of hip hop, rock and even neo soul, Pomona attracts a very interesting crowd of people.
The Theater is huge and has an old Hollywood film flair. Large and split into three sections, the theater has perfect viewing in all sections. The Pit section can evenly fit over 200 people but I've seen the con of the section. Though it gives you an up and close view of the performer, you have to deal with those wild crowds of people. The danger zone is what I like to call the area.Buying tickets for this area should come with a warning label. Caution will get drinks spilled on you, possibly end up in a brawl and receive bruises from fans interested in a mosh pit. Being 4'11, I struggled with fighting off grown men who behaved like 13- year- old girls seeing Justin Bieber in 2009. This area is terrible for us short people who aren't in the first row standing area. Speaking of standing avoid wearing heels at all cost. It is is not worth it unless you are in the balcony or back stage. The terrace area is a great median area to stand with less complications and good views. Though the platform is a little far from the stage, you still have a great view and lesser chance of getting into a brawl there. It is also usually by the speaker sets and you are able to hear the music the best in this area. Last is the balcony section, you can see everything in the theater from there. You also have your own little viewing section because not a lot of audience members buy tickets up there. Another perk of the area is that it is the closest to the restrooms and upstairs patio and bar. The area is smooth and also has chairs.
The Theater was a great setting but the performance was better than expected. For weeks people contemplated about the rappers return to the stage after his recents mishaps from bad contract negotiations, a breakup from his mentor and a seizure scare. However, he showed up looking better and healthier than ever. The rapper used his extending amount of musical credits to perform songs over his almost 25 year career. The line up was perfect and complimented both long time fans and those for some odd reason who never heard a song from him. The only con was the limited amount of time he had to perform because he had another concert to attend after. Other then that the concert was amazing and Weezy even treated the audience to other new rappers. Thus passing the torch for new talent to rise within this industry, that he is still trying to get the hang of.
